Franz Anton Mayer
The Franz Anton Mayer estate has been growing native Austrian grape varieities in the Wagram region for 4 generations. After the untimely death of Franz Anton Mayer Jr. in 2007, the winery was taken over by a young team of winemakers who are dedicated to continuing the long tradition of making classic, varietally distinctive wines. The team work meticulously both in the vineyards and in the cellar to produce the best quality wines, and in 2008 the winery was renovated and modernised to ensure the wines continue to be vinified in the cleanest, freshest style.
The vines here are planted on terraced vineyards that extend downstream along the left and right banks of the Danube. The loess topsoil here can be up to 15 metres thick, and the region is best known for aromatic expressions of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Gelber Muskateller. The cooler climate here also yields precise and lean wines from red varieties such as Zweigelt.
